Five horses are dead after being struck by a train.

Around 5:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 1, the Pine County Sheriff's Office received a report from the railroad that the horses had been hit in the Brook Park area near Birch Bark Road.

During his weekly report on the WCMP morning show, Sheriff Jeff Nelson acknowledged that it is not uncommon for deer or dogs to be hit be trains; however, it is rare that horses are hit and killed by trains.

The Sheriff's Office is unsure as to why the horses were on the tracks.
