Separate ATV crashes on the Fourth of July has left two people dead in Carlton County.
The first happened at the intersection of County Rd. 139 and County Rd. 6 just before noon in the Barnum Township. An initial investigation said the victim, a 47-year-old woman from Proctor, was traveling with a group of ATVs south on County Rd. 139. Authorities said the dust created by the group obstructed her view of the intersection; when she tried to stop, the victim lost control of the ATV and rolled on top of her. She died at St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth later that day.
The second crash happened in off Golf Course Road in the Holyoke Township, where responders were called around 8:30 p.m. The Carlton County Sheriff's Office says there were no witnesses to the crash but believe the victim, a 48-year-old man from Minneapolis, was traveling down a hill when the ATV rolled, pinning him underneath. The victim was declared dead at the scene.
Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in either of the two incidents.
