With the last big weekend of summer travel coming up, the Minnesota Department of Transportation urges motorists to use extra caution this Labor Day weekend.
Motorists should keep an eye out for more people walking and bicycling as children return to school beginning Tuesday.
The beginning of school also means buses will be back on the road, and following stop arm laws are paramount to child safety.
In the state of Minnesota, vehicles must stop at least 20 feet from a bus while the stop arm is out and the red lights are flashing. This extends to motorists approaching from behind the bus and from the opposite direction on undivided roads. Motorists don't need to stop for a bus if they are traveling on the opposite side of a separated roadway.
MnDOT recommends that motorists be prepared for slower moving traffic, think about using alternate routes, and call 5-1-1 or go to www.511mn.org to get information about road construction detours.
