BCA Releases Name of Man Who Died in Pine County Use of Force Incident

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has released the name of the Pine County sheriff’s deputy and man who died during a use of force incident near Sandstone last week.

According to the Midwest medical examiner, 34-year-old Kyle Bazant, of Bayfield, Wisconsin, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

A BCA release states that a state trooper attempted to pull Bazant over on I-35 last Tuesday for speeding. The chase ended after the car Bazant was driving reportedly went into the ditch.

According to body camera footage, Pine County Sheriff’s Deputy Carl Hawkinson fired bean bag rounds from a less-than-lethal shotgun to break the vehicle's rear windshield and passenger window.

When there was still no response from Bazant, law enforcement officers approached the vehicle and saw he was dead. A handgun was reportedly recovered from the car.

Once the BCA completes its investigation, they will present its findings to the Pine County Attorney’s office for review.
