Braham City Council approves chicken-keeping ordinance

The Braham City Council approved an ordinance allowing residents to keep domesticated chickens in city limits during their meeting last week.

The idea of allowing chickens within Braham residential districts was first discussed by the council in August of 2022. The city planning commission met last August and in January to further develop a draft ordinance.

According to the ordinance, a maximum of five chickens can be kept on a property of less than one acre, and up to 10 chickens can be kept on a property larger than an acre.

Applicants seeking to keep chickens must submit an application and site map that will be reviewed by city staff. The application fee for a permit is $150.

Roosters may not be kept under the ordinance, and the council agreed to drop a prohibition on selling eggs from the measure’s initial draft.
