Carjacking Suspect Fatally Shot by Police Near Braham

One suspect is dead and a police K9 was shot after a Twin Cities carjacking ended outside the City of Braham.


According to law enforcement, Blaine Police responded to a theft call at the Kohls just before 1 p.m. Sunday. Police located two suspects in one stolen vehicle. The suspects then carjacked another vehicle at gunpoint and fled north on Highway 65.

Officers pursued the suspects north of Highway 107, and their vehicle became disabled.


Blaine Police Chief Brian Podany said the two suspects fled on foot and engaged in a shootout with law enforcement, leaving one suspect dead and Anoka K9 Bravo wounded. The second suspect was taken into custody, and a gun was recovered from the scene.

Anoka Police say that the K9 was taken to the University of Minnesota Veterinary Medical Center for treatment. He is expected to survive the shooting.


Podany said that one officer was sent to the hospital with minor injuries from the incident in Blaine.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the incident. More details are expected to be released in the coming days.
