The United States Federal Court of Minnesota issued a ruling in favor of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe and their stance on the 1855 treaty boundary issue late last week.
The case involved issues regarding the boundaries of the Mille Lacs Indian Reservation and the extent of the Mille Lacs Band's sovereign law enforcement authority within those boundaries.
The Mille Lacs Band approved of the decision, calling the ruling a historic milestone and thanking all of those who have dedicated their time and energy to preserve the reservation.
Mille Lacs County stated they found the ruling disappointing, believing the court had reached the wrong conclusion. The county believes the recent decision will not be the last with plans to appeal all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court if needed.
