Kanabec County has been notified that the union representing highway equipment operators and technical staff intends to strike beginning no sooner than Jan. 17.
International Union of Operating Engineers Local 49 communicated its notice to the county on Jan. 3.
The notice triggered a 10-day cooling-off period, during which the parties will participate in additional mediation sessions.
According to a news release from county coordinator Kris McNally, Kanabec County is engaged in contingency planning to maintain critical services.
The release states that non-union staff and supervisors will work with alternate resources to ensure essential highway functions continue.
The county is hopeful that a strike can be avoided.
