Mora, Chisago Lakes school districts hold special elections

Two area school districts will hold special elections today.

Mora is seeking to fill a school board vacancy after a winning candidate in November’s general election declined to serve.

Matt Heggernes, Tina Akers, Marci Jenson, Kimberly Hodson, and Brett Parson are the five candidates vying to fill a vacant term that expires on Jan. 8, 2029.

Heggernes, who has previously served on the board, was appointed to fill the vacancy in the interim.

Voting is available at Mora City Hall from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Results will be posted as they become available.

Voters in the Chisago Lakes school district will decide on a $63.7 million bond referendum at an election on May 13.

According to the ballot question, the funding would address additions at the primary school, safety and security at Taylors Falls Elementary, the middle school, and high school, and various roofing replacement and parking lot improvements.

If the bond referendum passes, construction is expected to take place between 2026 and 2028.
