Mora 'in early stages' of exploring veterans memorial site becoming city park

The city of Mora is in the early stages of exploring the possibility of the veterans memorial site becoming a city park.

At last week's council meeting, mayor Jake Mathison said he's met with the local American Legion about the future of the memorial.

"I've taken some meetings with the local Legion to discuss potentially the war memorial site becoming a park, versus an independent operation. Becoming a city park that would be managed by the local Legion," Mathison explained.

Mathison said there is no definitive plan at this point, but the city would likely enter a lease agreement with the Legion to maintain the site.

"I've had some initial discussions about whether that's the best route to go for the community," he said. "Because it's been really nice to have it out there, and I think it's been really well-received and good for the community. And I want to see it succeed for a long time."

The memorial, which was dedicated at a ceremony on Sept. 8, 2024, is located at 203 Barker Street in Mora.
