Oak Park man seriously injured in Benton County Tannerite explosion

An Oak Park man was seriously injured on Saturday in a Benton County Tannerite explosion.


According to the Benton County Sheriff’s Office, witnesses reported that a bystander was injured while another person was shooting a rifle at about 9:30 p.m.


The injured party was located in a field in the 8000 block of 170th Avenue Northeast in Maywood Township.


He was identified as 26-year-old Collin Schumacher, and had sustained a substantial injury to his abdomen.


First responders were told that Schumacher and others gathered for the recreational use of firearms, including the use of Tannerite.


Schumacher’s injuries resulted from shrapnel produced when a large quantity of Tannerite was detonated inside of a metal barrel.


He was airlifted from the scene and transported to North Memorial Hospital.


Authorities didn’t report any other injuries or property damage due to the incident.
