The girls 5A-East subsection championship was a battle between the second-seed Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Jaguars and the top seed Braham Bombers at Foley High School. This was the first meeting for these two teams this season. It was a matchup that was a collision course for the majority of the season.
BBE was able to jump up to a large 18-4 lead with Braham having trouble getting into a rhythm offensively. Coach Zach Loy was forced to call a timeout. When asked what was said during the timeout Loy said, “It’s a game of runs. Don’t get too high or too low.”
That’s exactly what happened. After that timeout, the Bombers immediately went on an 11-1 run and used that momentum to gain a 30-26 lead at the halftime break.
The beginning of the second half was just as back and forth as the first. Toward the back end of the half, however, the Bomber’s suffocating defense all game started paying dividends opening up a double digit lead and finished off the Jaguars 64-51.
Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa finished their impressive season 20-9. They had two impactful seniors in Kacey Fischer and Tiffany Dingmann that will be missed, but a lot of the Jaguars will come back next year and will likely be a force in the conference once again.
Braham improved to 23-6 and will have a rematch against Pine River-Backus who beat Cass Lake-Bena in overtime on Tuesday night for the section crown and to earn an appearance at the State Tournament. The Bombers defeated the Tigers 70-56 on January 13th.
