Residents can now expect more detailed weather alerts.
Starting August 2nd, The National Weather Service will be adding a “damage threat” tag to severe thunderstorm warnings that will be sent to cellular devices.
The two added categories are “Considerable” for golf-ball sized hail and 70 MPH winds and “Destructive” for baseball-sized hail and winds at or over 80 MPH.
“Destructive” tags will be the only alerts that activate a Wireless Emergency Alert with only 10% of all severe thunderstorms reaching the destructive category each year.
