Five members of Sherburne County Drug Task Force shot while executing warrant, expected to survive

Five members of the Sherburne County Drug Task Force (DTF) were shot this morning and are expected to survive after being confronted by a suspect while executing a search warrant at a Benton County residence.


During the incident officers exchanged gun fire with the suspect. The suspect was arrested late Thursday morning without incident. The suspect was injured in the incident and was transported for treatment. The cause and extent of his injuries are unknown at this time.


The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has been called in to investigate the incident, which occurred in the area of 190th Avenue Northeast and Glendorado Road NE.


Three Sherburne County Sheriff’s Office members of the DTF were wounded, all with injuries that are considered to be non-life-threatening. A DTF member from Princeton Police Department and a member from Elk River Police Department also were wounded in the incident. The information available at this time indicates that their injuries are non-life-threatening.


Deputies from the Benton County Sheriff’s Office were present at the incident but were not injured.


According to Benton County Sheriff Troy Heck, the suspected shooter was identified as 64-year-old Glendorado Township resident Karl Holmberg.


Holmberg is being treated for injuries at North Memorial Hospital after being taken into custody at 10:47 a.m.


In a press conference, Heck said the investigation is ongoing and was unable to discuss details of the warrant being executed.
