Mora superintendent Dan Voce stopped by the Front Porch on Monday morning. Here are a few things we spoke about:
Graduation was this past weekend. Voce said: “The most exciting part of being a superintendent is watching the students walk across the stage.” He also noted the many different paths the students take after high school. “Some are ready to go on to college, and other students are prepared to go onto the trades.” Along with this part of the conversation, he noted the resources that students can take advantage of, such as a certified nursing program and emergency medical services certification they can take while still in high school through Pine Technical and Community College.
Voce spoke on funding that relies on a state budget. “Schools rely heavily on state funding. Around 60%-70%.” The uncertainty forces assumptions to be made by school boards when proposing a budget based on the information they have, because budgets are passed on June 30.
He also mapped out the communication between schools and state representatives. “We work very closely with our local representatives like Senator Rarick and Representative Nelson. A lot of those legislators will give us insight. They’re really good at taking time to listen to our local needs and try to impact legislation that is good for not just metro, but also rural districts.”
Mora Schools has a strategic plan for the future that involved a lot of surveying of stakeholders like students, families, and staff members. That information will be used by administrators and other decision makers for the school to make a “road map” for the future.
