The Lady Wolves played Sauk Centre at Hallenbeck Hall on Friday.
Another rematch for the Wolves in the playoffs, this time in the game to go to state. The Mainstreeters were once again the team standing in their way.
For Sauk Centre they wasted no time in getting themselves comfortable hitting a few deep three's early on. While Milaca couldn't quite answer there was no panic because the game had only just started. As the half went along the Wolves defense started to gain some traction and made a few stops. Their offense just couldn't find their footing yet and it began to cause them to force some shots. But their defense created some turnovers and kept them in the game down 30-16 at the half.
The 2nd half was very much like the 1st, but the Streeters offense was not hitting on all cylinders. This allowed Milaca to keep it close thanks to their defense. But time was not on their side and they were beginning to feel the pressure of the season coming to an end. Down by nearly 20 with under two minutes left the Wolves needed a spark, and they got it. Defense turned into offense, thanks to a handful of takeaways. They scored off of those and were able to get a few in a row. Now they had some momentum and the other side reeling a bit. Sauk was able to hit on a couple shots inside, but the game was not over. Milaca continued to fight until the very end, despite the clock not being on their side. They battled and kept scoring until the buzzer had sounded, and they came up short 55-41.
Although they won't represent the section at State, they have to be proud of their season and the effort they gave when it seemed out of reach.
Congrats to Milaca on a great year!
