The Mora Mustangs and Aitkin Gobblers faced off in a rubber-match on Saturday afternoon in the Section 7AA Quarterfinals. The Mustangs and Gobblers split both meetings this season, both games finished with a single-digit margin.
Mora came out firing. The Mustangs took a 16-4 lead early in the first half which forced Aitkin to take a timeout. After that, the Gobblers were able to settle down, but Mora kept growing the lead. The Mustangs went into the locker room at halftime holding a 44-21 lead.
Aitkin was not going away, however. With some really good pressure defense, especially in the back court, the Gobblers were able to cut the lead down to 11.
Mora was able to find their footing midway through the second half. The shooting was spectacular. Notably Senior Graham Balmer. Balmer finished with nine threes in the game. Because of the terrific shooting and the tough defense that we’re used to seeing from the Mustangs, Mora was able to upend the Gobblers winning 77-57.
Mora will move on and play the top-seeded Pequot Lakes Patriots on Wednesday at 5:30 on the campus of the University of Minnesota-Duluth.
