Hinckley-Finlayson Schools broke ground on new additions to the high school and elementary school on Monday, Sept. 10.
The elementary addition will provide a new space for the school's voluntary pre-kindergarten students, and the addition to the high school will add new offices, a larger gymnasium, and community education space.
The current Hinckley-Finlayson High School gym was built in the 1970s; it was built without the recommended safety space around the gym floor.
Superintendent Rob Prater said, "We are trying to get 10 feet of safety space all around (the gym). Kids in the two-thousand-teens are bigger and faster than they were in the 1970s, so we are trying to match up more with other districts in our area have with a safer gym for kids to play in."
The construction for the new spaces will go from now until next year.
