The city of Mora heard an update and ordered an assessment hearing regarding the proposed North Grove Street Improvement project during their meeting earlier this week.
The city is looking to reconstruct the length of North Grove from Forest up to Central, replacing water and sewer lines, improving street conditions and replacing stormwater gutters and drains. Preliminary figures estimate the cost of the project to be around 1.7 million dollars.
Preliminary assessments for property owners were presented, with totals ranging between nine to ten thousand dollars. Bonding and further funding will be discussed during the city’s next meeting.
Council stated that while costs were still impactful, the project was something that needed to be addressed. Council voted to move forward by a vote of 4-1, with Councilmember Broekemeier being the only nay vote. Broekemeier explained why she would vote no for moving forward at this time.
"My objection isn't with the cost of the plan. You know there is never a good time to raise taxes but I definitely think this is the wrong time for our taxpayers and so I just felt like the project should have been delayed."
An assessment hearing to be scheduled for May 3rd at Mora City Hall for residents to express their opinions or concerns. If approved, the city anticipates construction to start sometime in June and be completed by late September to early October.
